Womens health and vitamin supplements
Anything Healthy or Not March 1st, 2009
Everyday it seems you see an article with big time skepticism about herbal remedies, supplements and vitamins. But just today I ran across an article done about a study on women who had been taking folic acid and Vitamin B12, the study was published in the archives of internal medicine, you can read the article here.
Heres a quote taken from the article “Taking a combination of vitamins B6 and B12 and folic acid appears to decrease the risk of age-related macular degeneration in women, according to a report in the February 23 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.”
The article goes on to explain about age related macular degeneration which is a major cause of loss in vision in women after the age of 40, the only prevention of this disease is to avoid smoking. The study has found that treatment of the disease with Vitamin B6 ,B12 and Folic acid appears to reduce the homocysteine levels and can help in reversing the disease.
The study was done involving over 5400 women age 40 or older with very good results. I am sure they will find a way to tone down positive results of the study, but Vitamin B supplements have been around for many years with several studies showing improved health benefits.
For example Vitamin B1, B2 and B3 have shown to help improve overall energy and Vitamin B6 is essential in improving our metabolism function and vitamin b12 plays a role in helping cell division.
So if you are one to be skeptical about taking alternative herbal remedies or vitamin supplements I believe there is more here than just plain speculation, I believe that vitamin supplements really do work and help our bodies, especially in today’s modern world where we may not be getting the full vitamin nutrients from today’s foods. Ultimately you will have to use your own judgement on using vitamin supplements to improve your over all health.
