Weigh Loss – Do not expect an overnight miracle!

Weight loss is one of the most important issues affecting both the mind and the body of not just the average American, but urban population all across the world. Everyone seems to be obsessed by a slim and trim body. In many cultures this has become a symbol of not just good health but of beauty. In fact, it might interest you to note that Americans spend nearly $40 billion every year, just on products which promise a slim body.

This enormous amount is spent on various health foods and supplements simply because most people do not have the determination to avoid his or her favorite food along with lack of time and inclination to go for physical workouts.

So they depend on the magic pill to do all the work for them, while they relax and enjoy life in their own terms. One of the most important things to note before you pop in a diet or a weight loss pill or start depending on supplements is that since these brands are marketed as ‘natural’ products, the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) does not regulate it. This means that none of these products have been clinically tested for their efficacy as well as their long-term effects on the body. Their safety record is not established.

But then, all of us living in this modern age of aggressive advertising and marketing are constantly bombarded by ads which market ‘natural’ diet pills or supplements and promise to make you slim within the fastest possible time.

The wise weight loss customer should carefully study the labels of these weight loss pills or diet supplements before consumption, since all these ‘natural’ slimming products may not be safe. Endorsed by those slim and trim individuals, some of them are celebrities from worlds of fashion and beauty who show their ‘before’ and ‘after’ bodies, the pills and supplements seem to work like miracles.  But do these diet pills meant for rapid weight loss really work like miracles?

Diet pills and supplements can be classified under calorie burners, appetite suppressants and carbohydrate blockers. Calorie burners usually contain an ingredient called ephedrine, which is methylamino-l phenyl-l propanol. This can either be a derivative of the ma-huang plant or could be made from combining several herbal combinations.

One of the claims of calorie burners is that it increases metabolism. This can also cause increase in heart rate, which may turn into irregular heart beats, increase in blood pressure, nervousness, insomnia and depression. The bad news is that this ingredient is not only responsible for a host of illnesses, it may even cause death. An appetite suppressant, on the other hand decreases our hunger.

The important thing to remember is that our body’s metabolic functions depend on the intake of calories from food which is transformed to energy to perform the basic body functions. This means that if we take lesser food than is optimum to maintain our body functions, we might be harming our body in some way. Fat and carbohydrate blockers prevent our intestines from absorbing these nutrients. Many nutrients are transported to our blood stream with the help of fat, so putting a clamp on such absorption may deplete the body of essential nutrients. Side effects of these types of diet pills or supplements include cramping, diarrhea and bloating.
