Doctor taking blood pressureThere are just so many factors that contribute to high blood pressure. Smoking, drinking, obesity, not taking care of ourselves in general all do their part in developing high blood pressure. Even worse is the fact that high blood pressure seems to be a common factor in most things that seem to ail us nowadays. High blood pressure plays a role in heart disease, lung disease; kidney problems, diabetes and the list can go on and on. Think of high blood pressure as a gateway malady. There are a number of thing can be done to help prevent and control high blood pressure. Medications prescribed by a physician for high blood pressure should be taken as directed but that doesn’t mean finding some natural ways to help are out of the question.

Eating healthy is our first line of defence. I suppose it is in anything to do with keeping ourselves healthy. A diet strong in fruits and vegetables and low in sodium can help a lot. Salt is a big enemy in the war against high blood pressure.

Start getting some regular exercise if you aren’t already. Not only is keeping yourself physically fit simply good common sense it can really help in the battle with high blood pressure. Along with this and of course it goes without saying, lose the extra pounds. This is important as it’s not so much what a person weighs but where that weight is being carried. Twenty pounds overweight may not seem like a lot in today’s world, but if it’s all around the abdomen it’s a big factor in the high blood pressure war.

No SmokingTo say that smoking is harmful to a person’s health is an understatement. When it comes to high blood pressure it’s not an option. Smoking or any use of tobacco no matter what the form raises the blood pressure. If a person were to do only one thing to help control their own high blood pressure this would be the one.

Alcohol and caffeine should be very limited too. Studies have shown a few drinks, as in one or two can actually lower blood pressure. Herein lies the problem, it’s the rare person who can day after day limit themselves to one or two drinks. More than this and all benefits are lost. Caffeine should be cut down to a few cups a day also but coffee drinkers often face a similar problem.

Try to reduce stress and tension. Admittedly this is easier said than done or it wouldn’t bea factor in the first place. Start with getting outside, taking long walks or just engaging in a favourite pass time. Stress and tension are simply not good at the best of times and high blood pressure or not it should really be dealt with anyway.

Changing your lifestyle is great way to proactively deal with the high blood pressure or at least reduce the amounts of medication required. High blood pressure can be a very serious condition all by itself but with a little knowledge it can be naturally dealt with.
