There are many who are confused between losing fat and losing weight. This confusion must be cleared as certain amount of fat is necessary for the body to meet emergency energy needs. Indiscriminate fat loss can result in very serious conditions.

A man is considered to be obese if the fat content of his body exceeds 25%. This figure for women is 30%. Going by this formula over 60% of the population is obese.

Any fat loss program essentially consists of two parts: reducing excessive calorie consumption which allows fat build up and secondly burning excess fat which has been accumulating for a long time. Reducing excessive calorie intake involves following a balanced and disciplined diet plan whereas fat burning can be accomplished with a diet plan combined with adequate physical exercises. Fat burners are available in the market but it is advisable to avoid them but if you insist on using a supplement to aid you in your weight loss there are many herbal and natural supplements on the market that can help.

Exercises for fat burning is not about developing a six-pack abdomen but gradually getting rid of stored fat while remaining healthy and fit. Aerobic workouts and jogging are the bare minimum which can be included in your exercise schedule. Metabolic rate is increased with the help of exercise which in turn burns fat. In fact, muscles burn more calories than fat.

A healthy and balanced diet should ideally consist of proteins, carbohydrates and fats which belong to the ‘good’ category. The word ‘good’ is used purposefully so that people understand the undesirability of some components of a healthy diet.

Every item in your weight loss program has its own role to play. For instance, exercise is good for health as well as burning calories. Protein is good for building muscles. Low fat proteins are milk products such as skimmed milk, cottage cheese, yogurt as well as fish. These are therefore called ‘good’ proteins.

Similarly, ‘good’ carbohydrates are beans, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains as they are not only good suppliers of essential carbohydrates but they also act as appetite suppressants since it takes a long time to digest these foods. They are also low to moderate in calories and fats.

Though difficult to believe, fatty foods are actually good for the body. sources of good fatty acids are Salmon, Mackerel, Sardines and Herrings which also has beneficial effects on blood pressure, lowers the risk of heart failures and prevents blood clotting.

Foods rich in fiber hardly add any calories but give you a ‘full’ feeling. Most of them are not digested by the body and on its way out they carry many fats and proteins. Source of good fibers are apples, beans, broccoli, brown rice, nuts and bran.

An essential item which helps in fat loss is water, especially ice cold water. It is a natural huger-suppressant and also helps in burning stored fat.
