Created by Barbara Rolls, the volumetrics eating plan has become very popular and has given effective results for many weight watchers. One of the reasons why the volumetrics eating plan has become a favorite is because it is based on the simple truth that people normally would like to eat and given a choice, most of us would love to eat the food that we like. Come to think of it, weight loss plans fail, because they do not allow you to eat and gradually, you yearn for food and the deprivation makes you unhappy and frustrated. On the contrary the volumetrics eating plan is eating lots of food while you can still go on losing weight. This may sound incredible, but Rolls theory focuses on eating a full stomach which many diets do not allow you to. Rolls mentions that people feel full based on the volume of food which they eat and it has nothing to do with calories, proteins, carbohydrates, etc. So the essence of volumetrics diet is to fill your stomach with foods which have either low or zero caloric value. It has been found that people tend to eat more in this volumetric diet plan, and still lost weight.
So what are the salient features of the volumetrics eating plan and the volumetrics diet? First of all, in the volumetrics diet plan, there are no food which are prohibited though one must remember that some of the foods suggested are based on a concept of 'energy density' which is nothing by the calorific content of each food. For instance, fatty foods have more energy density than other foods as more calories are densely packed in a small amount of the food item. On the other hand, water has zero energy density as it has no calories. So when you eat foods which have more energy density, you are actually consuming foods rich in calories and when you fill up your stomach with foods which have low energy density, then you are consuming fewer calories which help you to lose weight yet keep your stomach full.
Foods which have low energy density are soups and broths, skimmed mill, or vegetables which do not contain any starch. On the other hand, high energy density foods are chips, cookies, chocolates, nuts, oils, butter etc. The core of a volumetrics diet are foods with high water content such as fruits and vegetables which may have water content up to 95%. The volumetrics eating plan also includes foods which are righ in filling fiber, lean protein and fish. Of course energy dense foods like sweets, fats and alcohol are also permitted in the volumetrics diet but you ought to consume these with moderation.
According to many nutritionists and dieticians, the volumentrics diet is an intelligent way to lose weight where you can reduce your calorie and fat intake and in stead eat lots of fruits and vegetables which have a high level of water content. This way you would never feel hungry and yet lose weight, healthily. The first of the four categories of foods which have low energy density include tomato soups and vegetables which are low in starch content. The second category includes fruits, vegetables, cereals and pasta. The third category includes cheese, pizza, salads with lean meat and ice cream. So, as is evident, with volumetrics eating plan and volumetrics diet, you could lose weight, keep your stomach full and remain happy too.
